We install both wood and chain link fences, and we get this question almost every time: which one should I get? The honest answer is that it depends on what the fence is actually for.
When Chain Link Wins
Chain link is the right call when you need a fence that:
- Keeps dogs or kids contained without blocking your sightlines. You can see across the yard, which matters if you're watching kids from the porch.
- Needs to last with minimal maintenance. A quality galvanized chain link fence will outlast most wood fences without any staining, painting, or board replacement.
- Has to cover a lot of ground cheaply. If you need to fence 300+ feet, chain link is significantly less expensive per linear foot.
Chain link isn't glamorous, but it's honest. It does exactly what it's supposed to do.
When Wood Wins
Wood is the better choice when:
- Privacy is the goal. A solid-board privacy fence blocks line of sight from the street or neighbors. Chain link doesn't.
- Aesthetics matter for resale or curb appeal. A well-built wood fence adds character and value to a property.
- You want to match an existing fence or neighborhood style. Chain link can look out of place in certain neighborhoods.
The tradeoff is maintenance. In Central Texas, wood fences take a beating from UV and moisture cycles. Plan on staining or sealing every few years and replacing boards over time.
A Note on "Ornamental" or Metal Fencing
If you want something in between β the permanence of metal but a cleaner look than chain link β ornamental steel or aluminum fencing is worth considering. It's more expensive than either wood or chain link, but it essentially never needs maintenance and looks sharp around landscaping.
Our Honest Take
If you have dogs or just need a practical property boundary: chain link. If you have neighbors close by and want privacy or you care about how the yard looks: wood. If you want it to last 30 years without touching it: ornamental metal.
